New York: George Maragos, Nassau County Comptroller, has appointed entrepreneur and community activist Jose Jacob (Jose Thekkedom) as a member of the Comptroller’s Minority Affairs Committee.

He will work as a liaison between the Indian community and the Comptrollers office as regards minority or women owned business enterprises.

Comptroller Maragos said his office is committed to promoting opportunities for minority and women owned business enterprises (MBWE) to participate in the County contract awards. Committee members are expected to represent and advocate for MWBE firms within their communities.

The MBWE program was established by the Nassau County Legislature in 2002 to increase the participation of the qualified minority and women owned enterprises as subcontractors on county contracts.

All the County contracts are reviewed and approved at the Comptroller’s office. All invoices are audited and paid through the office too. As a result of these pivotal responsibilities, the office has the authority to ensure that the goal of the law is achieved.

Margos said he set up the committee for the successful implementation of the law. ‘It’s purpose will be to reach out to minority and women-owned business enterprises to encourage their participation in County contract opportunities, to assist in monitoring MWBE’s fair treatment, and to improve the County’s compliance with its aspirational MWBE goals,’ Margos said in a statement.

Members of the committee will meet on a quarterly basis.

The minority and women entrepreneurs can utilize the help of the committee members to get details of projects and contracts. In addition the committee members will organize outreach programs to create awareness about getting contracts and doing business with the County.

Jacob is a successful realtor for the last quarter of a century. He works closely with several Indian organizations. Currently he is the secretary of Indo-American Malayalee Chamber of Commerce.

Jacob said he is happy to join the committee and serve the county and the people. Youngsters in the community are not very keen to start businesses. He said he will help them and others in their entrepreneurial endeavors and also to get contacts from the County.
