Lucknow, Nov 15: Thousands of people lined up outside banks and ATMs in the state capital and other parts of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday as banks opened after a holiday.

Quite a few people queued up outside bank branches overnight to exchange demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes while early risers joined the queues in the early morning hours.

Serpentine queues were seen in Alambagh, Aliganj, Hazratganj, Narahi, Sarojininagar, Niralanagar, Chinhat, Takrohi, Indiranagar, IT College crossing, University Road and many other places in state capital Lucknow.

Short on new currency and patience, people openly expressed their resentment over the demonetisation move of the Centre and griped that it was causing them great inconvenience since November 8.

At some places, however, support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi was quite evident among women and youth, who said the move will go a long way to benefit the country and its people.

Reports from Sitapur, Gonda, Agra, Ambedkarnagar, Kanpur, Etawah, Mainpuri, Firozabad, Varanasi, Shrawasti, Ghazipur, Gorakhpur and Ballia told of long queues outside banks and automated teller machines.

Fearing law and order problems, heavy police presence was ensured in most districts and ambulances pressed into service to deal with any eventuality.
