New airports to be named after city they serve: Minister
New Delhi, July 18
The government on Tuesday said that new airports will be known by the name of the city they serve.
According to Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha, naming of airports after eminent personalities can potentially create confusion among passengers and "may also be contentious, at times, due to political nature of the requests."
"Hence, in future, as a policy, the airports may be known by the name of the city, in which, they are located, served. However, names of existing airports need not be changed, disturbed," the minister informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question.
