Indian doctor in Kansas stabbed to death
An Indian doctor hailing from Telangana was stabbed to death in Wichita in Kansas .
Achutha Reddy, a psychiatrist, was murdered in his clinic in East Wichita, on Wednesday night. Police have arrested Umar Rashid Dutt, 21, also Indian American and a patient of the doctor.
Reddy was affiliated to some other hospitals in the region. He was a specialist in absolute yoga.
Umar Rashid was arrested near the Wichita Country Club, according to a Sedgwick County Jail booking report. Wichita police Lt. Todd Ojile said the club has nothing to do with the homicide. Neither man lived in that area and police aren’t sure why the 21-year-old man drove there. However, about 20 minutes after police were called about the stabbing, a security guard at the club saw a man covered in blood sitting in a car and called 911, Ojile said.
Umar Rashid was seen going into the office for a short time before he left. He later came back with Dr. Reddy, 57, and they both went into an office, Ojile said.
Local media said the office manager told police she heard a disturbance and walked in on the doctor being assaulted, Ojile said. She intervened and Reddy was able to get away, but the Umar chased him to an alley behind the office, where Reddy was stabbed numerous times, Ojile said.
Umar was held on a bond for $1 million.
Hailing from Nalgonda district, Dr. Reddy graduated from Osmania Medical College in 1986. He later moved to the US, where he completed his residency in psychiatry from the University of Kansas Medical School in Wichita.
Police: Patient stabbed Wichita psychiatrist to death
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -
Wichita police have arrested a 21-year-old man for Wednesday evening's stabbing death of Dr. Achutha Reddy.
Jail records show Umar Rashid Dutt was booked early Thursday morning for first-degree murder. Lt. Todd Ojile said the suspect was arrested after a security guard at the Wichita Country Club reported a suspicious person with blood on him who was sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot.
Officers were called shortly after 7 p.m. to a stabbing at Holistic Psychiatric Services on Carriage Parkway, near Central and Edgemoor. Lt. Ojile said Dutt was Dr. Reddy's client.
"The suspect was in the business for a short time. He left and then later came back with Dr. Reddy, and they went into an office. After going in an office, a disturbance was heard. An office manager entered into the office and observed the suspect assaulting Dr. Reddy."
Ojile said the office manager tried to stop the assault, which allowed Dr. Reddy to flee the office.
"The suspect then chased Dr. Reddy out of the business, where he caught up with him in the alley behind the business where we believe a second assault occurred."
Dr. Reddy died of multiple stab wounds.
Via Christi's website says Reddy attended medical school at Osmania University in India in 1986 and did his residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1998. He specialized in psychiatry.
