Bengali Woman Leader wins AARP Community Hero Award - Media Avail at 1.30

Dilafroz Nargis Ahmed, Center Director of India Home's Desi Senior Center in Jamaica, Queens will receive the 2017 AARP Asian American and Pacific Islander Community Hero today for her untiring service to aging immigrants in the Bangladeshi community in Queens. AARP's Asian American and Pacific Islander Community Hero Awards were created to acknowledge the hard-working staff and volunteers of non-profit organizations serving AAPIs age 50-plus!

Ms. Ahmed is one of three AARP Asian American and Pacific Islander Community Hero Award winners. Ms. Ahmed and her organization, India Home, will each receive a $1,000 cash prize at a ceremony being held at the Desi Senior Center in Jamaica at 1.30 on Wednesday, January 24th.



The Senior VP for Multicultural Affairs and the VP for Multicultural Affairs at AARP will come in from Washington on Wednesday 1/24/2018 at 1:30pm to present Nargis an award and felicitate her in person at India Home's Desi Senior Center in Jamaica, Queens. AARP is the world's largest non-profit organization, and the largest membership based organization in America.

Dilafroz Nargis Ahmed has helped new immigrants in the Bangladeshi community in Queens, New York for three decades. At India Home's Desi Senior Center, Ahmed works to improve the quality of life of vulnerable South Asian seniors in a culturally appropriate environment. Since 2014, Ahmed has strived to make India Home a comfortable place for immigrant seniors to come together, adjust to living in a new country, and build community. Ahmed also helps Bangladeshi older adults access services and find jobs.
