President Trump signs bil to change the name of post office after Captain Humayun Khan
President Donald Trump has signed into law a bill naming a Charlottesville, Virginia post office for fallen U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, whose father Khizr Khan, criticized Trump at the Democratic National Convention two years ago.
The bill brought by Rep. Tom Garrett (Republican) renames the Barracks Road Shopping Center post office in Charlottesville, Virginia, as ‘Captain Humayun Khan Post Office.’
Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine released a joint statement saying the president had signed the bill.
Khan was 27 when he died in Iraq in 2004. He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was the only University of Virginia alumnus killed in Iraq, according to a university plaque.
The elder Khan denounced Trump’s calls to ban Muslims from entering the United States. He also questioned whether Trump had even read the US Constitution — as he thrust forward a pocket-sized copy.
Trump responded forcefully to the Gold Star family, suggesting wrongly that Khizr Khan’s wife Ghazala Khan might not have been “allowed†to speak because of her religion, NY Post reported.
She later refuted his suggestion, saying discussing her son’s death was too upsetting.
Trump’s reaction was condemned by prominent Republicans, including the late Sen. John McCain, a former Vietnam POW whose heroism was belittled by Trump when he said: “I like people who weren’t captured.â€
Trump later called Capt. Khan a “hero to our country,†but reiterated his proposal to prevent Muslims from entering the country.
“While I feel deeply for the loss of his son,†Trump wrote, “Mr. Khan, who has never met me, has no right to stand in front of millions of people and claim I have never read the Constitution, (which is false) and say many other inaccurate things.â€
Capt. Khan, 27, was killed in a suicide car bombing in Baqubah, Iraq, on June 8, 2004, after he ordered his men to “hit the dirt†and he moved forward when a taxi approached his unit.
His action saved his men
