June 23, :
The exiled spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, the Dalai Lama, arrived in New York to undergo knee surgery to the applause and chants of hundreds of his devoted followers. As a stretch limo pulled up to his hotel in Manhattan, the 88-year-old saluted from the open window. He was helped to the entrance by attendants as he walked slowly.

Following the failure of the 1959 Tibetan rebellion against Chinese control, the Dalai Lama escaped to India. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has struggled with health issues for a long time.

Several fans showed there hours early in the hopes of catching a glimpse of a man returning to America for the first time since 2017.

This was my chance of a lifetime, and I knew I had to seize it. The four or five hours spent waiting outside were well worth it, Tenzin Kunkyi remarked.

When you're here, you feel a tremendous feeling of community since everyone is passing around bread. She went on to say that witnessing His Holiness blesses us, but that outside, we also build our link as Tibetans. The Dalai Lama may or may not meet with US officials during his visit; Beijing views him as a dangerous separatist. He clarifies that he is not advocating Tibet's independence. Protesters, some of whom were adorned in vibrant robes, came to the streets outside the hotel to dance.

We hope that the Dalai Lama has a long and fruitful life. Byamba Suren, who departed from Virginia at 3 in the morning in a car bound for New York, expressed the hope that the Dalai Lama will pay a visit to China to greet the Tibetan population.

While visiting India last week, a delegation of US legislators met with the Dalai Lama and pledged to reject any attempt by China to influence the succession process. The authorities of Tibet have been in talks with Beijing since 2010, but those talks have stopped.
