House Republicans Accuse Biden of Committing Impeachable Offenses
WASHINGTON — August 20:
Republicans in the United States House of Representatives released a report that accused Democratic President Joe Biden of crimes that might lead to his impeachment. However, it remained uncertain if they would seek a vote in response to the investigation, which the White House has always denied being politically motivated.
Three House committees released a 291-page report alleging that Biden and his family benefited from an influence-peddling operation that started in 2014, when Biden was vice president, through international business activities. "The committees present this information to the House of Representatives for its evaluation and consideration of appropriate next steps," the study concluded.
With Republican Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris in a tight race for the November 5th election, it was unclear whether Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson would call for an impeachment vote against Biden in the weeks preceding the election. A conviction by a Senate controlled 51–49 by Biden's own Democratic Party would be necessary to remove him from office, so even if the House, which is controlled by Republicans, were to approve such a bill, it would be highly unlikely to succeed. After his successor is sworn in on January 20, Biden is expected to vacate the job. Last month, Biden dropped his own reelection campaign.
The House of Representatives impeached Trump twice, but the Senate acquitted him each time. Democrats have criticized the move, seeing it as retaliation for Trump. Trump was initially impeached for allegedly pressuring Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the president of Ukraine, to assist in smearing Biden in exchange for American aid.
Alejandro Mayorkas, Biden's senior border official and Homeland Security Secretary, was swiftly removed from office in April after an impeachment attempt by the House. The committees' efforts were lauded by Johnson, who added that Republicans in the House "encourage all Americans to read this report."
House investigators claim that Biden benefited his son Hunter Biden's business relationships with international partners from nations such as Russia, China, and Ukraine by using his influence. In addition to his pending trial for tax evasion, which includes an accusation that he took payments from a businessman in Romania who wanted to influence U.S. government agencies regarding a criminal investigation in Romania, Hunter Biden is already convicted of lying about his drug use in order to purchase a firearm.
House Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways & Means Committees have been conducting the impeachment investigation that legislators officially approved last December. Members of both parties have blasted the investigation for not having produced concrete evidence of Biden's malfeasance.
