Short Film on Vice President Kamala Harris's Life and Political Ascent Set for October Theatrical Release
September 2 :
In October, cinemas around the country will host a short film that chronicles the life and rise to power of Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris made history by becoming the first Asian American and Black woman to be nominated for president. Samir Zakir and Gerard Pizarro are making their directorial debuts on the film "KAMALA," which is a collaboration between Illumin8 Entertainment and Pizarro Creative.
According to a press release, "KAMALA" explores the themes of perseverance and fight for justice that are central to Harris's narrative through the use of unique storytelling techniques, animation, and interviews with notable individuals.
"This film is about more than Kamala's political journey—it's about her humanity," Pizarro said, emphasizing the film's emphasis on Harris's humanity. It's about her, the joyful warrior.
A recurrent motif in the film is the lotus flower's (Sanskrit: Kamala) symbolism, which stands for perseverance and growth. A writer and producer in his own right, Samir Zakir aptly characterized the team effort as "underdogs telling an underdog story," a description that echoes Harris's and the filmmakers' personal struggles. Former South Carolina state lawmaker and current CNN political analyst Bakari Sellers is bringing new expertise to the group in the role of consulting producer. Tracey Bing of Badabing Pictures produced the film, which aims to be an artistic examination of a modern-day trailblazer by shedding light on the unsung stories and personal sacrifices that have impacted Harris's journey.
