Kenya has ordered the cancellation of Adani infrastructure deals worth more than $2.5 billion
Bangalore, November 27,:
Indian business magnate Gautam Adani's eponymous ports-to-soybeans conglomerate was rocked by news of his indictment by US authorities for allegedly participating in a $265 million bribery conspiracy. Claims are denied by the Adani Group.
The United States government has accused seven individuals, including one of the wealthiest men in the world, of engaging in what they have dubbed "The Corrupt Solar Project"—bribery in connection with power supply arrangements in India. Adani, along with the other accused, faces his greatest obstacle to yet.According to Adani Group, which is in charge of numerous important infrastructure projects worldwide, the accusations are without merit, and the company has promised to pursue all legal options.
A single Adani Green Energy deal, accounting for around 10% of the unit's business, is allegedly the subject of the accusation, according to the group's CFO. In the midst of opposition demands for an investigation and accusations that Modi is protecting Adani, which his governing party denies, the party of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has distanced itself from the tycoon.
Meanwhile, millennial heir Sagar Adani is allegedly the one who kept tabs on "bribe notes"—hundreds of millions of cash sent to Indian officials—and is now the center of attention. In transactions beginning in 2021, the United States government became aware of the alleged bribes when Adani's enterprises sought funding from investors in the United States.
Authorities have claimed that Adani Group made misleading statements earlier this year about its awareness of the U.S. probe, which has added fuel to the fire of the scandal and prompted questions about the company's market and public disclosure practices. Credit rating agencies like Fitch and Moody's downgraded the outlook for multiple listed firms owned by the Adani Group, adding to the strain on the conglomerate's debt and equity caused by the US indictment.
Some financial institutions are thinking about cutting off new loans to the firm as a result of the indictment, and energy giant TotalEnergies has decided not to invest in the Adani firm any more. A U.S. development agency is 'assessing consequences' on a Sri Lankan port project it had agreed to fund, while Kenya has directed the termination of Adani infrastructure accords worth over $2.5 billion. Andhra Pradesh, a crucial southern state in India that was implicated in the indictment accusations, is contemplating the suspension of a power purchase agreement with Adani. In Bangladesh, a government panel investigating power transactions, including one with Adani, has sought legal assistance.
What does Gautam Adani have planned for the future? He faces charges of securities fraud, conspiracy to commit securities fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Despite widespread speculation that he is in India, Adani remains evaded capture and his location remains a mystery. Whether Adani is extradited or surrenders in the United States, a trial may still be far off. The judge presiding over the case will decide on the exact punishment, although a conviction could land Adani in prison for decades along with financial fines. The court has ordered Adani to respond to the US SEC's charges within 21 days.
