The Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, D.K. Upadhyay, has withdrawn the judicial duties of Justice Yashwant Varma following the directions of the Supreme Court. This decision comes in the wake of the discovery of cash at Yashwant Varma's official residence. A three-member internal inquiry committee appointed by the Supreme Court will soon begin its investigation into the matter.
Since the cash recovery incident came to light on March 21, Yashwant Varma has not attended court proceedings. The inquiry team will also review recent cases handled by Justice Varma and has requested case details for further examination. Additionally, the committee will thoroughly investigate the mobile records of Yashwant Varma, his family members, and his staff for the past six months with the assistance of experts.
The committee plans to record the statements of staff at Varma’s residence after analyzing the report submitted by the Chief Justice of the High Court and Yashwant Varma’s explanation. Discrepancies between the information provided by the police and Justice Varma will be closely examined by the inquiry team.
Although the cash was discovered at 11:30 PM on March 14, the police only informed the Chief Justice the following day at 4:30 PM. Moreover, there is no mention of the cash recovery in the official police records.
