Indian Open Snooker: Classy Wilson eases into pre-quarters
By
Anand Philar Mumbai, March 12
Kyren Wilson, one of the
rising stars from England, unveiled his potting and break-building
prowess with runs of 119 and 105 to put out compatriot Ben Woolaston 4-1
and to qualify for the pre-quarterfinals of the Indian Open World
ranking snooker tournament here on Thursday.
The 23-year-old
Wilson, ranked 60, put in a polished performance while taking out
Woolaston who was not given any chance to repeat his great escape act of
the previous round when he turned back a 67-point deficit in the final
frame to beat Yu Delu 4-3.
Woolaston, finalist at the recent
Welsh Open that took his ranking to 26, won the first frame quite
comfortably. But he was simply blown off by Wilson's strong reply in the
form of 119, 52, 105 and 75 in the next four frames.
On an
adjacent table, China's Li Hang won 4-1 against Stuart Carrington of
England who marked his presence with a run of 138 that topped the
previous highest break of 136 by John Higgins.
Joining Hang in
the round of 16 was compatriot Tian Pengfei who fired a brilliant 106 in
the fifth frame to shut out Englishman Mark Joyce 4-1.
World
No.16 Robert Milkins displayed sure touch in defeating Joe Swail of
Northern Ireland 4-1, notching four half-century breaks in the process
to also book his berth in the round of 16.
Equally impressive was
2006 World champion and No.17 Graeme Dott of Scotland who outclassed
Irelanda¿s 52nd ranked David Morris 4-0 with high breaks of 91 and 60 in
a match that also highlighted the difference in the rankings.
The
37-year-old Scot was fluent in winning easily while Morris struggled to
stay with his opponent, managing just 50 points in four frames.
