Babu Varghese appointed to Florida Board of Professional Engineers

Mr. Babu Varghese has been appointed to the Florida Board of Professional Engineers by Governor Rick Scott. Mr. Varghese P.E. is the president and principal engineer of Abtech Engineering Inc., a mulch-disciplinary engineering firm he founded in 1988  in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  

The Florida Professional Engineering Board regulates the practice of engineering in the State. It was established in 1917 by Florida legislature in order to protect the life, public health and safety by ensuring that the engineering profession is practiced in the proper manner. The board oversees over 35,000 licensed engineers and is comprised of 11 board members, nine of whom are licensed professional engineers representing multiple disciplines and two unaffiliated lay persons. The Board is responsible for reviewing applications, administering exams, licensing qualified applicants and enforcing proper practice of engineering in State of Florida.         

Mr. Varghese, who is licensed in over a dozen states, also has offices in Kerala. His design firm has been associated with many prestigious engineering projects in the US including shopping malls, hotels, high rise buildings, airports, cruise terminal, waste-to-energy facility, department store chains, distribution centers etc. 

He is frequently called upon as an expert witness on issues related to forensic engineering by courts.  He has also been involved in community and religious projects where he has freely donated his services.  A recent example was his services and contribution for the design and construction of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial and Statue installed at the Falcon Lea Park in South Florida. The Memorial was unveiled by former President of India Dr. Abdul Kalam.

Mr. Varghese who hails from Thrissur, obtained his undergraduate degree in engineering from Cochin University of Science and Technology. He was then awarded a scholarship to pursue graduate studies in engineering in the US in 1984. 

His engineering and detailing firms in South Florida have a sterling reputation for quality and problem solving.

Mr. Varghese lives in Fort Lauderdale with his wife Asha, who is a CPA. His eldest son George and daughter Annmarie are structural engineering students at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His youngest son Paul is a sixth grade student.
