UN observer group looking into Pakistan ceasefire complaint
United Nations, July 22 The UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) is looking into Pakistan's complaints about ceasefire violations by India, a UN spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.
Replying to a reporter's question, Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon's Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said Tuesday, "If one or the other parties asks the UN observer mission, UNMOGIP, to observe complaints about a ceasefire violation, it will follow up on that, and that is what it is doing."
" At this stage there is nothing to report back," he added. " It will file a report on the situation."
Pakistani media had earlier reported on the UNMOGIP team's visit to points along the line of control in the Sialkot area of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The Daily Times said that the UNMOGIP "team was informed that the Pakistan Army befittingly responded to the unprovoked Indian firing" last Friday.
India maintains that the UNMOGIP set up in 1949 has outlasted its utility, especially because of the 1972 Simla Agreement between Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto recognising the Kashmir dispute as a bilateral issue.
