Dalas, Texas: Three-year-old Sherin Mathews was laid to rest in a private ceremony Tuesday, wfaa.com reported.
The funeral was held "according to the religious beliefs and the cultural heritage of her family," attorneys Mitchell R. Nolte and Gregg Gibbs said in a statement.
Her burial location is being kept a secret for security reasons and threats of grave desecration, the attorneys said.
Sini Mathews, Sherin Mathews' adoptive mother, her parents, close family and friends attended the event. Wesley Mathews, the adoptive father, who is in jail and the elder daughter, who is in foster care, did not attend the funeral.
"Because of the intense press and social media attention in this case, the family chose to keep the ceremony private so the focus could be on Sherin’s future in Heaven and not on her tragic death on Earth," the attorneys said.
They added that the family "cannot express their gratitude to everyone personally," but appreciates the outpouring of prayers and love during this time.
Sherin Mathews went missing on October 7 and her body was found Oct. 22 near a culvert, not far away from her home.
Wesley Mathews initially told the police that he put her outside the house under a tree at 3 am to discipline her for not drinking her milk.
After the body was found he changed the story. He said he ‘assisted’ her to drink milk at 3 am at their garage and she choked to death. Then he moved her body.
He's remains in the Dallas County jail on a $1 million bond.
