AI Policy and Innovation to be Guided by USIBC's New AI Task Force

A pioneering effort by the US-India Business Council (USIBC) to influence AI policy and innovation, the AI Task Force convened its first virtual gathering of industry heavyweights to foster cooperation and investigate potential areas of synergy. In a press release, the top India-U.S. business advocacy group stated that the first virtual Al-TF meeting took place on April 25 and that the topic of cross-sector collaboration was discussed in light of Al's increasing prominence.

With the goal of developing, leveraging, and commercialising Al technologies for the benefit of each country's democratic citizens, the USIBC Task Force aims to align and drive U.S. and Indian leadership in the Al ecosystem, promote common Al concepts/principles within national and multistakeholder processes, and boost industry competitiveness.

The press statement mentioned that the gathering was attended by prominent figures from several high technology fields, including logistics, semiconductor design and production, commercial electronics, biotechnology, telecommunications, space, defence, IT, and financial services. Important topics for international development, economic competitiveness, and national security were also on display during the event, providing an opportunity to discuss potential areas of collaboration and synergy.

"Our Al Task Force marks a bold stride towards a future where Al not only revolutionises industries and lives, but also reinforces free societies," noted USIBC President Atul Keshap. In this revolutionary endeavour, the USIBC Board of Directors and prominent corporate members are steadfastly leading the charge.

"As we move forward in the realm of artificial intelligence, these partnerships highlight our determination to make sure that democracies can use tech to build bridges between countries and spur citizen-led prosperity."

Joining USIBC's Artificial Intelligence (Al) Board Advisory Committee are prominent business figures Bala Subramanian (Executive Vice President and Chief Digital and Technology Officer at UPS), Akash Shah (Chief Growth Officer and Global Head of Growth Ventures at BNY Mellon), and Inderpreet Sawhney (Group General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, Infosys Limited).

Bringing together the best business minds in India and the United States, this expansion will allow USIBC to better drive collaboration and innovation in the dynamic sector of Al.

UPS VP and chief digital officer Bala Subramanian expressed his pleasure at being named to the USIBC's Al Advisory Committee. Joining together with the Indian and American governments, this influential group forges robust ties between companies and their respective governments. UPS has a long history as a technology firm, and we are thrilled to share the lessons we've learned along our Al journey.

"Being a part of Al Advisory Committee is a privilege," stated Inderpreet Sawhney, Group General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer of Infosys. The Advisory Committee has identified the responsible implementation of Al as a primary emphasis area, and at Infosys, we share this concern.

I am excited to use my position on this Committee to talk about the tech-legal parts of Al that Infosys got to work on. Working together, the United States and India have access to a wealth of talent and data that may revolutionise many industries.

On top of that, the USIBC Al Task Force has named Meta to co-chair its executive committee. Projects that seek to advance accountable and inclusive Al solutions to pressing social issues will benefit greatly from Meta's wealth of industry expertise and resources.

The new members are being welcomed to the esteemed Al Board Advisory Committee by Meta, who will also serve as Co-chair of the Al Task Force, and by these outstanding individuals, as we move forward with our Al Task Force, Keshap said with great excitement.

As we face possibilities and threats in fields as diverse as business, science, healthcare, logistics, and technology, their guidance and knowledge will be invaluable in determining our approach to Al strategically. Their contributions will be greatly appreciated and will assist USIBC increase its impact and advocacy for Al's revolutionary power. A joint initiative of the US and Indian governments, the USIBC has been around since 1975 and now represents hundreds of leading multinational corporations with operations in India, the US, and the Indo-Pacific region.
