Indian-American Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar's Office Defaced
September 6 :
A rock was hurled through the glass of Indian American Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar's Queens district office, shattering the front door, in the early hours of last week. Internet surveillance footage shows the assailant making their way to the workplace, then picking up a big rock from the pavement and hurling it through the front door, shattering the glass in the process.
The district office where I work was vandalized today. My picture was broken to bits in the office door. According to Rajkumar's statement, which was cited by QNS, the video footage shows the culprit carrying out this crime at around 4 in the morning. In response to the event, Rajkumar—who represents the Glendale, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Ridgewood, and Woodhaven neighborhoods—condemned the vandalism and reaffirmed her dedication to her job. "Each instance of bullying and harassment only serves to fortify our team," she reiterated.
Many people have spoken out against the attack. As a disturbing example of political violence, especially targeting women of color, the crime was decried by 'They See Blue NY,' a political movement committed to the mobilization and empowerment of South Asian communities. A political climate free of violence and fear was underlined by the group in their statement.
A disturbing example of the larger problem of political violence, which is particularly common targeting women of color, this episode is an assault on Assemblywoman Rajkumar. In a statement, the organization expressed their relief that Assemblywoman Rajkumar and her staff were unharmed. Rajkumar is assisting the New York Police Department with their investigation. She is the first Indian American woman to be elected to the New York State Legislature. She just made her candidacy for NYC Comptroller public.
